Public assistance programs - financed by federal, state, and, in some instances, local funds, provide aid to families or persons on the basis of need (and possibly other eligibility conditions).
Some of the most common assistance programs include:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps.
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), also known as welfare.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
